All 12 aspirants seeking to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Tamale Central have been cleared by the party’s vetting committee.
The primary will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.
The vetting exercise, chaired by NDC Deputy General Secretary Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, was completed on Sunday, August 31, after which balloting was conducted to determine positions on the ballot paper.
The aspirants include former Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive Abdul Hanan Abdul Rahaman Gundadoo, University for Development Studies Principal Research Assistant Seidu Mohammed, diplomat Mariama Naama Salifu, and Dr Rahman Abdul Rashid.
Also in the race are civil engineer Dr Aliu Abdul Hamid; Tamale Technical University’s Prof. Razak Abubakari, former NDC-UK/Ireland Chairman Alhaji Alhassan Nbalba, and Prof. Seidu Alidu, former Head of Political Science at the University of Ghana.
Others are Hajia Muliaka Sualisu, lawyer Sadat Harun Alhassan; entrepreneur Alhassan Osman Gomda and NDC Northern Regional Treasurer Hajia Shamima Yakubu.
For the first time, three women are contesting the constituency’s primary.
Ms. Asamoah urged all aspirants to campaign with restraint and decorum to avoid divisions.
Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John also appealed to supporters to shun acts of violence during the campaign.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled the Tamale Central by-election for September 30, 2025, following the death of MP Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a military helicopter crash on August 6.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not field a candidate.
