Attorney General says he discontinued Ato Forson’s case because of political victimisation & witch-hunt

Ghana’s Attorney General (A-G) and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, says he had to discontinue the trial of the current Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson because he believes the Minister was politically victimised by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government.

Dr Ayine explained that the reasons behind his decision to file for some cases involving NDC members to be dropped was because he had studied the trial trajectory and saw it would be needless to pursue those cases.

In Dr Ato Forson’s case, the AG stated at a press conference that he had been involved in the case from the onset and had a thorough understanding of the trial.

Dr Ayine stressed that he found no justification to continue the trial against Dr Ato Forson.

“I believed then, and still believe now, that Hon. Ato Forson was a victim of a political witch-hunt and that he has no case to answer in this trial,” he said while downplaying the entire case against Dr Ato Forson lacked legal merit.

“That position was vindicated by the erudite judgment of the Court of Appeal which ruled that the trial court erred in calling upon the accused persons to mount their defence.

“When the then Attorney General vowed to file an appeal and actually went ahead to do so, I took the view that it was done to save face and that there was not a scintilla of merit to his appeal. Indeed, the appeal was, to say the least, incompetent” he said.
