Bawku mediation: Otumfuo calls out Cletus Avoka over inciteful public commentary

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called out former Member of Parliament (MP) for Zebilla in the Upper East Region, Cletus Avoka, over comments he described as inciteful.

According to the Otumfuo, such comments undermine ongoing peace efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace to Bawku.

Speaking during the presentation of the final mediation report to President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Jubilee House, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II singled out the former legislator for what he termed provocative public remarks.

“My son, Cletus Avoka, if he is here, has to be very careful with the pronouncements he makes publicly. It is not right. It is a dicey situation.

We are all trying to make amends and get people to move together as brothers and sisters. It looks like he is making various pronouncements, which would not inure to the peace that we want,” he said.

The Otumfuo stressed that the law recognises the Bawku Naaba as the overlord, and that this must be respected, adding that actions capable of derailing the gains made in the peace process must not be allowed to persist.

“The Bawku Naaba is the Bawku Naaba. The law is on his side; we agree to that. But you don’t make pronouncements on radio and elsewhere that will incense the other side. Where we have reached now is more like reconciliation,” he emphasised.

He further explained that he had established seamless engagement with both the Mamprusis and Kusasis during the mediation process.

“When I was carrying out the reconciliation, one person said, ‘When I was drinking pito with you across the aisle, looking from the Kusasi side, talking to the Mamprusi mother, were we not drinking pito together?’ And my son, Mahama Ayariga, has a father and mother, Kusasi and Mamprusi, isn’t it? So how can they fight? So please, Mr President, I just wanted to explain,” the Otumfuo added.
