Bernard Bediako Baidoo wins Akwatia by-election for NDC

Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Akwatia parliamentary by-election, securing a vital seat for the ruling party in one of 2025’s most closely fought contests.

Official results from the Electoral Commission showed Bediako polling 18,199 votes, defeating Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 15,235.

Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) placed a distant third with 82 votes.

A total of 34,122 ballots were cast, of which 33,819 were valid and 303 rejected.

The by-election was held to replace the late Ernest Kumi, the NPP MP who died earlier this year.

Campaigning was fiercely contested, with both major parties deploying top officials and heavy resources across the 119 polling stations.

Voting closed at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, followed by sorting and counting in the presence of party agents, security officers, and election observers.

Celebrations erupted among NDC supporters as news of the victory spread, with jubilant crowds filling the streets of Akwatia.

Analysts say the result is significant, given Akwatia’s reputation as a swing constituency that has alternated between the NDC and NPP in past elections.

The win is being touted as a boost for the NDC’s confidence heading toward the 2028 general elections.

Bediako, now officially the MP for Akwatia, pledged to continue the work of his late predecessor while pushing forward the government’s development agenda in the constituency.
