Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called on global organizations such as Zonta International to deepen investments in women entrepreneurs, emphasizing their crucial role in Africa’s economic transformation.
Speaking at the 27th Zonta International District 18 Conference in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to gender equality, citing initiatives such as improved access to education, stronger legal protections for women, and expanded support systems.
She underscored the importance of collaboration, stressing that while laws and policies are essential, lasting change depends on partnerships among governments, organizations, and communities.
The Vice President also highlighted ongoing government initiatives promoting women’s empowerment, including expanded access to quality education, financial inclusion programmes, enhanced support systems for women-led businesses, and strengthened legal frameworks to combat gender-based violence.
“While laws and policies are vital, they must be implemented alongside partnerships and people-centred approaches,” the Vice President stated. “True transformation in our communities requires collective effort from government, the private sector, civil society, and grassroots actors alike.”
Conference Chairperson, Madam Opeibea Omaboe, also highlighted Zonta International’s achievements, noting the organization’s longstanding impact in empowering women and uplifting local communities worldwide.
She recounted the organization’s journey in District 18, comprising Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone and outlined the numerous scholarships, advocacy campaigns, and economic empowerment projects undertaken by Zonta clubs over the years.
