Damongo to host Catholic science and technology university — President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the establishment of a Catholic Science and Technology University in Damongo, the Savannah Regional capital.

The town will also host a new regional hospital, which will serve as a teaching facility for the university.

The President made the announcement during a courtesy call at the Presidency by Most Reverend Philip Naameh, Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, and his delegation.

According to President Mahama, initial funding for the proposed university will come from a $30 million grant pledged by the Chinese President during his recent visit to Ghana.

He explained that the accompanying regional hospital “shall also serve as a teaching facility for the proposed Catholic Science and Technology University, which will have a Faculty of Medical Sciences to train medical doctors and other allied health professionals.”

The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to revamping Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions as part of a broader strategy to align education with national development priorities.

The name and location of the proposed university were suggested by Archbishop Naameh and his team, who used the meeting to highlight pressing educational and social issues affecting northern Ghana and appealed for government intervention.

Among those present at the meeting were Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu (MP); Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to the President; Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Office of the President; and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
