Data bundle packages to increase from July 1, 2025 – Sam George

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, announced today that data bundle packages across all major telecommunications networks in Ghana will see substantial increases starting July 1, 2025.

The announcement, made during a press conference in Accra, follows successful negotiations with telecom operators to enhance data offerings for consumers amid rising operational costs.

Effective July 1, 2025, new telecom measures in Ghana will increase data bundle allocations. AirtelTigo and Telecel will see a 10% increase, with AirtelTigo’s GH¢400 bundle rising from 195GB to 236GB, and Telecel’s GH¢400 bundle from 190GB to 250GB. MTN Ghana will implement a 15% increase, notably adjusting its GH¢399 bundle from 92GB to 214GB, a significant improvement from its prior 182GB offering.

Minister George acknowledged the financial burden these changes place on telecom operators, stating, “I am aware these increases will come at considerable cost to the network operators. However, I am glad that our engagements and consultations are bearing fruit for the Ghanaian people.”

He emphasized that the adjustments aim to balance consumer benefits with the sustainability of telecom services in the face of economic pressures, including inflation and currency depreciation.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions. Some Ghanaians have expressed appreciation for the increased data allocations, with social media posts highlighting the improved value for money.

For instance, one user noted, “236 gig of data now for 400 cedis was previously 118 – AirtelTigo. Thank you, Sam George.” Others, however, remain concerned about affordability, given Ghana’s economic challenges.

These changes build on previous telecom adjustments, such as MTN’s 15% price hike in November 2023, which reduced data volumes for the same price points due to regulatory requirements and operational costs.

The current move, however, focuses on increasing data allocations rather than prices, a shift that has been welcomed by consumer advocates.

The Minister also clarified that these increases apply to standard and promotional bundles but do not extend to holiday-specific bundles, which are limited to national holidays like Independence Day and Republic Day, as previously announced.

Consumers are encouraged to check with their respective providers for updated bundle details and to take advantage of non-expiry bundles where applicable.

Telecom companies are expected to roll out these changes seamlessly by July 1, with further details available on their official platforms.
