The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to introduce a new number plate system embedded with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to boost security, curb smuggling, and streamline toll collection.
According to DVLA Chief Executive Mr. Julius Kotey, the plates will carry both a regional name and area code to indicate a vehicle’s origin.
Each plate will also be linked to a central database, making it impossible to register smuggled or so-called “Togo” cars.
The RFID feature will enable automated, contactless toll payments, which officials say will help reduce congestion at toll booths. The rollout is scheduled for 2026.
Mr. Kotey explained that the initiative is part of the DVLA’s broader push to modernize vehicle registration and improve road security.
The system is expected to minimize human error, curb fraudulent practices, and strengthen law enforcement’s ability to track vehicles involved in crime.
The DVLA describes the project as a landmark reform that will provide citizens with a more efficient and secure system for registering and monitoring vehicles.
