E/R: Police intercept 150 sacks of suspected ‘wee’

The Eastern Regional Police Command has intercepted two tipper trucks carrying 150 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, following an intelligence-led operation yesterday June 11, 2025.

Two Howo Sino tipper trucks, bearing registration numbers GN 993 14 and GG 3674 20, were intercepted at a checkpoint with concealed sacks hidden beneath sand.

The drivers were arrested on the spot, and all suspects are currently being processed for court proceedings.

This latest seizure follows a series of anti-narcotics operations in the region.

In late May, Eastern North Regional Police intercepted 5,950 parcels of suspected Indian hemp concealed in 85 sacks aboard a boat on the Volta Lake, leading to the arrest of three individuals.

The Volta Lake has increasingly emerged as a major trafficking corridor, with smuggling routes used to transport narcotics from border entry points into the country.

The Eastern Regional Police described the interception as a clear sign of intensified anti-trafficking operations.

Authorities say the arrests form part of a sustained crackdown on drug syndicates operating across the region, especially along high-risk smuggling routes.

The scale of the seizure marks a significant disruption to major trafficking routes and serves as a strong deterrent to smuggling syndicates operating in the region.

Police say intelligence-led patrols along both roadways and Volta Lake will continue as part of ongoing efforts to intercept illicit shipments.

The arrested suspects are expected to face prosecution, while investigations are actively underway to uncover the broader criminal networks behind the operation.
