Energy Minister inaugurates new NPA board, promises stronger sector oversight

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated the newly constituted Board of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), reaffirming government’s commitment to tighter regulation and improved governance in the petroleum downstream sector.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Mr. Jinapor underscored the strategic importance of the downstream petroleum industry to Ghana’s economic development, and called for greater vigilance, innovation, and transparency from the regulator.

“Given the complexity of operations and the wide range of service providers involved, the regulator must be vigilant, proactive, and transparent,” he said.

The Minister cited fuel smuggling, adulteration, tax evasion, and product dumping as persistent challenges threatening the integrity and efficiency of the sector.

He called on the new Board to enforce licensing and regulatory standards across the value chain, while embracing digital solutions and strengthening local participation.

Mr. Jinapor also revealed that the Petroleum Downstream Sector Reforms Committee (PDSRC) had recently submitted its report to the Ministry.

The committee was tasked with recommending reforms to boost efficiency, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability in the industry.

He pledged to review the proposals thoroughly and collaborate with the new Board, the NPA, and private stakeholders to build a resilient sector that attracts investment and ensures energy security.
