Farming grew by 6.6%, fishing by 16.4% — Ato Forson projects drop in food prices

The Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says Ghana’s agriculture sector recorded a 6.6% growth, with fishing alone expanding by 16.4%, in what he describes as a strong signal that food prices will continue to decline in the coming months.

Delivering the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, today 24 July 2025, Dr. Forson attributed the growth to increased investments in agriculture and improved weather conditions.

He said the performance reflected the resilience of rural producers and the impact of government interventions.

“Agricultural GDP grew by 6.6%, and the fishing sub-sector recorded a significant 16.4% growth. These are among the highest in recent years and will help ease food inflation,” he stated.

Dr. Forson explained that the bumper output is already feeding into lower food inflation, which fell from 28.7% in January to 15.4% by June 2025.

He added that continued support to farmers and fisherfolk will sustain this trend.

“We are confident that prices of maize, fish, vegetables, and other staples will stabilize and decline further,” he said.

Ghana’s economy expanded by 5.3% in the first half of 2025, marking its strongest growth since 2020. Non-oil GDP grew by 6.8%, driven largely by gains in agriculture.

The government attributes this progress to continued support for farming and fishing through subsidies, improved extension services, and enhanced access to mechanization.
