In a disturbing development, illegal miners, known as galamseyers, have taken to excavating people’s homes in search of gold in Ayanfuri, Central Region.
The activities of these galamseyers have left residents in fear and have caused significant damage to properties.
The galamseyers, allegedly led by Agya Yaw, have been operating openly in the area, despite the risks they possess to residents. One resident, Diana Agyapong, has had his house besieged by these galamsey operators.
According to Mrs. Diana Agyapong the galamseyers have dug a big hole on their land, endangering lives and destroying their food crops. She said they are worried about the consequences if they are not stopped immediately.
She alleged that the galamseyers are well-armed and have security protection. They’re also accusing Perseus Mining Ghana Limited, a multinational mining company operating in the area, allowing the galamseyers to invade their property.
The residents are calling on the security agencies to intervene and stop the illegal mining activity. They’re demanding that the perpetrators be brought to book and that measures be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
The people of Ayanfuri are demanding action from the authorities to stop the galamsey menace.
