The Ghana Prison Service is set to benefit from major infrastructure upgrades and capacity-building initiatives aimed at empowering the service to fully deliver on its constitutional mandates, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has announced.
Speaking at the graduation parade of Prison Officer Cadet Course Intake 32, the Vice President emphasized that these investments are part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the correctional system. She stated:

“We’re retooling the Ghana Prison Service to improve operational efficiency, the welfare of officers, and the dignity of those in custody.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted that the initiatives will not only enhance the operational capacity of the service but also support programmes designed to generate employment and revenue.
“Initiatives are underway to create the conditions for large-scale production of textiles, furniture, sanitary, and construction products, with the aim of generating jobs and expanding internationally sourced revenue for the Ghana Prison Service,” she added.

The Vice President also commended President John Dramani Mahama’s recent amnesty for 998 inmates, describing it as “a powerful statement of mercy and a reminder that true justice requires compassion and a belief in second chances.” She further noted:
“The amnesty for 998 inmates forms part of our broader efforts to decongest our facilities, enhance humane conditions, and uphold the spirit of the correctional system.”
Cadet Course Intake 32, comprising 265 officer cadets – 162 males and 103 females – reflects the service’s commitment to gender inclusivity, merit-based selection, and leadership development.
The three-phase training programme, which began on 27th December 2024 at the Ankaful Training Centre, is structured to produce disciplined, competent, and service-oriented correctional officers.

The Vice President concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment, stating: “The Ghana Prison Service will continue to benefit from infrastructure and capacity-building support to empower the service to deliver on its constitutional mandates.”
