Ghanaian exports now duty-free in China – Foreign Minister announces

Ghana and China have reached a landmark agreement that will see zero percent tariffs on 100% of Ghanaian exports to China an unprecedented move expected to significantly boost trade, create jobs, and support local entrepreneurship.

The announcement followed high-level bilateral talks between Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, held on the sidelines of the ongoing China-Africa Summit in Changsha.

“This is a game-changer for Ghanaian businesses and entrepreneurs,” Ablakwa stated.

“The 0% tariff on all Ghanaian goods entering the Chinese market will bolster trade, create jobs, and produce more Ghanaian entrepreneurs.” He also Noted.

China remains Ghana’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding US$11 billion in the past year alone.

The new tariff-free access is expected to deepen this relationship further by making Ghanaian products more competitive in the world’s second-largest economy.

Beyond trade, the two ministers discussed strategic industrial partnerships aimed at supporting Ghana’s national transformation agenda.

Key among these is a proposed integrated aluminum industry, built around Ghana’s bauxite reserves and supported by modern rail infrastructure.

Ablakwa also announced plans to collaborate with China on establishing an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Ghana, leveraging the country’s strategic lithium deposits.

“We are laying the groundwork for Ghana to become a regional hub in electric mobility,” he said.

These initiatives will be formalized under a Special Economic Partnership Agreement, expected to be signed in the coming months.

Both governments have described the evolving cooperation as a “mutually beneficial partnership.”

The new trade deal and proposed industrial ventures signal a renewed commitment by both nations to expand and redefine their strategic ties building on 65 years of diplomatic cooperation amid shifting global economic dynamics.
