GMA condemns dismissal of Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has strongly opposed the dismissal of the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), citing unfair treatment and an abuse of authority.

They condemn the handling of medical staff by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, when he visited the facility and called for the  dismissal of the CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, following reports of alleged negligence that led to the recent death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

The decision comes amid growing concerns about the deteriorating state of healthcare delivery at the facility, where several essential medical equipment are reportedly non-functional.

In response to the situation, Mr Akandoh, paid an unannounced visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22, as part of a broader effort to assess the challenges facing healthcare delivery in the Northern Region.

Reacting to the dismissal in a statement issued on Wednesday, April 23, the GMA condemned the actions of the Minister during his recent visit to the hospital. The medical body describes the CEO’s dismissal “an affront to due process.”

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” the statement said.

The association also criticised what it called a “media audit” of the recent patient death at the facility, warning that it breached patient confidentiality and exposed the hospital to legal risks while prejudicing public opinion.

According to the GMA, the head of the Emergency Unit has since received threats and has been subjected to cyber-bullying, endangering his safety and mental well-being.
