The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has uncovered what it describes as the most elaborate gold smuggling syndicate since its establishment, implicating RAFMOH Gold Ltd and NK Bernak Enterprise.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the GoldBod Head Office in Accra, Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi said the breakthrough followed a tip-off from a patriotic whistleblower.
According to him, the GoldBod Taskforce arrested Abdul Razak Seidu on August 27, 2025, at the Winneba Junction, in possession of 9.2kg of gold valued at about GHS10.2 million.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Bernard Nkrumah, a Tier 2 licensed gold buyer operating in Tarkwa under the business name NK Bernak Enterprise, and Ibrahim Aremeyaw, a key associate of RAFMOH Gold Ltd.
GoldBod said RAFMOH Gold Ltd emerged as the sponsor and mastermind of the smuggling network.
“It has been established that RAFMOH Gold Ltd, through its officers and couriers, illegally purchased over 100kg of gold valued at more than GHS100 million from NK Bernak Enterprise in the last two months alone,” Mr. Gyamfi disclosed.
The suspects have been arraigned before the High Court on charges including facilitating gold smuggling, transporting gold without authorization, and related offenses.
While some suspects remain in custody, others were granted bail but have yet to meet bail conditions.
Three key suspects, Muhammed Afsah Puthalan, Abdul Karim, and Sadique Abubakar remain at large.
Arrest warrants have been secured, and GoldBod has placed a GHS1 million bounty on each of them.
The public has been urged to provide information on their whereabouts by reporting to the nearest police station, the GoldBod Head Office at the former Bank of Ghana building on High Street, Accra, or via toll-free numbers 0800 44 653 and 0800 44 654.
Meanwhile, GoldBod has suspended the license and shut down the offices of NK Bernak Enterprise in Tarkwa, as well as closed the RAFMOH Jewelry shop at Palace Mall in Accra due to its links to the syndicate.
Mr. Gyamfi reaffirmed GoldBod’s commitment to sanitizing Ghana’s gold trade, warning that anyone engaged in illegal gold trading, hoarding, or smuggling will face the full rigors of the law.
