The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has issued a statement distancing itself from an impending industrial action by the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL), clarifying that it has no involvement in the planned demonstration set for Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
In the statement, the GRDA emphasized that the two entities are entirely distinct, both legally and operationally.
While the GRCL is responsible for the operation of passenger and freight rail services, the GRDA is mandated by the Railways Act, 2008 (Act 779) to develop, maintain, and regulate the country’s railway infrastructure.
“The GRDA remains fully operational and has not initiated or endorsed any form of public demonstration,” the Authority stated.
The clarification follows rising public concern over potential disruptions across the railway sector.
GRDA assured that its work remains unaffected, particularly in relation to the imminent operationalization of the 97-kilometre Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line, which will be serviced by two newly procured trains.
“This milestone reflects GRDA’s continued commitment to fulfilling its infrastructure development mandate,” the statement added, highlighting ongoing efforts under Ghana’s Railway Master Plan to build a modern standard gauge railway network.
GRDA urged the public to distinguish clearly between its operations and those of GRCL and reaffirmed that all GRDA-led projects and staff activities remain on course.
“We thank the public for its continued support and understanding,” the Authority concluded.
