Greater Accra minister warns MMDCEs against turning offices into party meeting grounds

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has delivered a stern warning to some Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region, accusing them of politicising their offices and failing to deliver on their mandates.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, Mrs. Ocloo described the practice as an “abuse of office and betrayal of public trust.”

“I have reports that many of you have turned your official offices into party meeting grounds, filling them with unauthorised officials and visitors, while your staff are denied access to discuss official matters. This is unacceptable,” she cautioned.

The Minister said she would not hesitate to escalate issues to the Presidency if MMDCEs continued to neglect their responsibilities and undermine President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda of “resetting Ghana for a better future.”

She further criticised what she called widespread inefficiency and complacency among some chief executives.

“Leadership is not about sitting in offices and enjoying perks of your position, but about delivering results. Right now, many of you are simply sleeping on the job,” she stressed.

Mrs. Ocloo also raised concerns over the increasing use of personal assistants by MMDCEs to perform official duties, warning that the practice was unlawful and undermined accountability.

“Assemblies cannot be run by unelected, unapproved and unappointed individuals hiding behind your authority. This must stop immediately,” she said.

Her remarks come amid growing public calls for greater transparency and accountability in local governance across the country.
