GTA CEO pays tribute to late highlife icon Daddy Lumba

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has paid a moving tribute to legendary highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, following his death on July 26, 2025.

During a condolence visit to the late artist’s family residence in East Legon on Wednesday, July 30, the GTA boss expressed profound grief and shared personal reflections on the life and legacy of the beloved icon.

“When I first heard it, I didn’t believe it. I thought it was one of those social media hoaxes. Gradually, it dawned on me that it was true,” she said with visible emotion.

Ms. Houadjeto, a self-confessed longtime fan, recalled fond memories of attending Daddy Lumba’s annual concerts at the National Theatre.

“I used to attend his shows every year. I never missed them. I may not have said it publicly, but I’ve always been a Daddy Lumba fan. His lyrics and style were simply unmatched,” she remarked.

She praised the late musician’s role in promoting Ghanaian culture on the global stage, describing him as an unofficial ambassador for the country.

“With his years abroad, he was more or less like an ambassador. He sold Ghana through his music, and Ghanaians appreciated him for his genuineness,” she added. “He will forever be in our hearts.”

The GTA CEO also conveyed official condolences from the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and assured the family of the ministry’s full support during the candlelight vigil scheduled for Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Independence Square.

Addressing the media after signing the book of condolence, she disclosed that the Ministry and GTA had planned to feature Daddy Lumba prominently in the “100 Years of Highlife Music” celebration later this year.

“We were planning to honour Highlife’s finest, and Daddy Lumba was one of our lead stars. His untimely passing is a huge loss, but we are committed to honouring his legacy as part of this centenary celebration,” she noted.

“It has already happened, but we will ensure that we do something fitting in his memory.”
