GTEC declares all DBAs from SMC unrecognised

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally announced that all Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) certificates issued by the Swiss Management Centre (SMC) University are not recognised for academic or professional purposes in Ghana.

Ghana’s Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has declared that the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) awarded by SMC University and the joint SMC–Universidad Central de Nicaragua (UCN) top-up PhD are not recognised in Ghana.

The notice, signed by GTEC Director-General Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai on 21 October 2025, replaces all previous statements from GTEC and the former National Accreditation Board.

The decision followed investigations into the credentials of several individuals, including Ken Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, who used the “Dr.” title from an SMC DBA.

GTEC found irregularities in institutional naming, accreditation status, and academic standards.

Holders of these qualifications are advised they cannot use them for promotions, public recruitment, or licensing.

GTEC urged institutions and employers to verify all credentials through its Credential Evaluation Department and reiterated its authority under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) to validate academic qualifications.
