The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has undertaken unannounced visits to the Achimota and Ga North Municipal Hospitals as part of efforts to assess healthcare delivery and identify critical operational gaps.
At the Achimota Municipal Hospital, the Minister toured several departments, including the maternity unit, female ward, VIP ward, consulting rooms, and pharmacy.
He interacted directly with both staff and patients, who raised concerns over prolonged service delays, long queues, and inadequate staffing.
A particular concern was highlighted at Room 7 of the Medical OPD, which was found vacant during the visit.
Hospital management explained that out of the seven medical personnel assigned to the unit, three were on leave and one was indisposed, a situation contributing to the sluggish pace of service delivery.
At the Ga North Municipal Hospital, staff cited persistent technical and logistical challenges, notably a broken anaesthesia machine and frequent network failures, which disrupt National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) claims processing and patient services. They also drew attention to co-payment issues under the NHIS and stressed the urgent need for the replacement of obsolete medical equipment.
Speaking to the media after the visits, Hon. Akandoh acknowledged the concerns raised and emphasized the urgent need for enhanced supervision, increased staffing, and upgraded medical infrastructure.
“We are committed to addressing these issues. Improving healthcare delivery requires not only infrastructure but also adequate human resources and strong systems,” he said.
The Minister assured Ghanaians of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to build a more efficient and patient-centered healthcare system, urging hospital administrators to maintain high standards of care while government interventions are rolled out.
