The Ministry of Health has strongly condemned an assault on medical staff at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (formerly Ridg e Hospital), highlighting its detrimental impact on healthcare delivery and staff safety.
A video circulating online depicted relatives of an accident victim violently confronting emergency ward personnel over perceived delays in treatment.
Tensions escalated into a physical assault on a nurse, prompting hospital management to call in the police to restore order.
In a statement signed by Tony Goodman, Deputy Director and spokesperson for the Ministry, the incident was labelled “unfortunate” and a serious threat to both patient care and the safety of healthcare workers.
The Health Ministry has announced a set of immediate actions following the confrontation at the hospital.
Security at the facility will be reinforced to prevent any recurrence, while a full investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the incident, including possible service delays.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh personally visited the hospital to assess the situation and reassure staff of the government’s support.
The Ministry further appealed to the public to show patience, cooperation, and respect when engaging with healthcare workers, especially in emergency settings.
Hospital management reiterated that the emergency department is one of the nation’s busiest, with clinicians attending to multiple critical cases when relatives forcefully entered the triage area, disrupting care and compromising clinician safety.
