I nearly switched nationality to play for Nigeria – Joetex Asamoah-Frimpong reveals

Former Black Stars striker Joetex Asamoah-Frimpong has revealed that he once came close to switching nationality to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria during his time with Enyimba FC.

Speaking in an interview with Kwadwo Fosu Fandy on Power FM/TV XYZ Sports, the former Ghana international disclosed that he felt overlooked and underappreciated by Ghana’s national team handlers at the time, making the Nigerian offer tempting.

According to him, a delegation from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) approached him with a proposal to naturalise and feature for the Super Eagles.

“They invited me to play for Nigeria, and I nearly accepted because I had seven Nigerian friends at Enyimba who also influenced my decision. But my father advised me to always choose Ghana, and shortly afterwards, I received a call-up to the national U-23 team, the Black Meteors, where I even scored on my debut against Liberia,” he recalled.

Asamoah-Frimpong represented Ghana between 2005 and 2009, and was part of the squad that played in the qualifiers for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, helping Ghana secure its first-ever qualification to the global showpiece.

However, despite his contribution during the qualifiers, he was not included in the final 23-man squad that travelled to Germany for the tournament.
