Mrs. Abigail Aboagye, widow of the late Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Samuel Aboagye, delivered a moving tribute at the state funeral for the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, recalling how she had been eagerly counting down the days to their reunion in the United States.
“I was holding onto those words with so much joy, eagerly counting down the days until I would see you again in Atlanta, Georgia, on the 18th.
I was waiting to be in your arms, to laugh with you, to celebrate my birthday by your side like we had planned,” she said.
Her voice broke as she confronted the cruel reversal of fate.
“Why then… why am I in Ghana mourning you instead?”
The couple’s plans for joy and celebration were cut short by the helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of Mr. Aboagye, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, and three Ghana Air Force personnel, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
