“It’s the impact that matters, not the position” – Seidu Agongo

Businessman and philanthropist Seidu Agongo has urged Ghanaian leaders to prioritise humility, service, and positive impact over the trappings of power, stressing that positions are fleeting but legacies endure.

In an opinion piece reflecting on recent national developments, the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight government officials and military officers, and the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Mr Agongo said the events serve as stark reminders of the fragility of life and the transient nature of authority.

“These are not just headlines. They are reminders. No matter how high we climb, how powerful we become, or how secure we feel, everything can change in an instant, in a blink,” he wrote.

According to him, the tragic deaths showed that once titles and possessions are stripped away, only one’s impact on others remains.

Likewise, Justice Torkornoo’s removal under constitutional provisions demonstrated how quickly fortunes can change, even for those in the highest offices of the land.

Mr Agongo warned public officials against arrogance and abuse of authority. “Do not use your office to antagonise.

Do not weaponise your authority to settle scores,” he cautioned, adding that positions may be temporary, but the scars of poor leadership can be permanent.

He pointed to the crash victims’ mission to address illegal mining as an example of true public service, noting that leadership must be about serving others, not self-aggrandizement.

“As we mourn the helicopter crash victims and reflect on the Chief Justice’s removal, let us embrace the sobering truth these events reveal: positions are temporary, but impact is eternal,” he said.

The philanthropist concluded with a call to leaders to leave behind compassion, service, and kindness as their true legacy.

“When the curtain falls and it will, only your impact will remain. Ghana needs leaders who understand that true greatness lies not in the position you hold, but in the lives you touch.”
