Judicial Service workers to begin indefinite strike over unpaid salary arrears

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Monday, January 19, 2026, over the government’s failure to pay eight months of salary arrears owed to its members.

In a notice of intended industrial action addressed to the National Labour Commission, JUSAG said the arrears relate to the delayed implementation of a 10 per cent base pay increase approved for Judicial Service workers for the 2025 financial year.

According to the Association, the salary adjustment was approved by President John Dramani Mahama in line with Article 149 of the Constitution and was effective January 1, 2025, consistent with adjustments granted to other public sector workers.

However, JUSAG said that unlike other public sector employees, the implementation of the adjustment and its related allowances for Judicial Service staff was delayed until September 2025.

Government assurances were subsequently given that arrears covering the period from January to August 2025 would be paid before the end of the 2025 fiscal year.

The Association said the government failed to honour that commitment, despite several engagements with the Ministry of Finance and follow-up correspondence with the Judicial Council and the Judicial Secretary.

JUSAG noted that in a letter dated December 16, 2025, it formally requested the payment of the outstanding arrears and received assurances from management that the matter would be resolved. However, the arrears remained unpaid.

Describing the situation as intolerable, the Association said Judicial Service staff—who form the backbone of the Judiciary, the third arm of government, have endured prolonged financial hardship throughout 2025 due to persistent challenges with salary reviews.

JUSAG said the failure to pay the arrears was particularly painful during the December festive season, when workers had expected the eight months’ arrears to cushion them after months of financial strain.

Following an emergency meeting, the National Executive Council of JUSAG resolved to embark on an indefinite strike from January 19, 2026, until the full payment of the eight months’ salary arrears from January to August 2025 is made.

The Association said the National Labour Commission has been duly notified of the intended industrial action.
