Justice for Muniru: zongo communities urge presidential intervention

Zongo communities across the country, led by civil society organisation The New Ghana, have issued a heartfelt appeal to the Office of the President, calling for the release of Muniru Fuseini, a man they insist has spent eight years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

In a formal petition addressed to the presidency and copied to the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the group outlined the circumstances of Muniru’s arrest.

According to the account, Muniru was jailed after unknowingly purchasing a mobile phone linked to a criminal case, a decision that has cost him nearly a decade of his life behind bars at Nsawam Prison.

Described by his community as a man of “integrity and trust,” Muniru’s incarceration has reportedly caused deep emotional and psychological trauma.

The New Ghana also revealed that his mother passed away during his imprisonment, a tragedy they attribute in part to the emotional toll of her son’s wrongful conviction.

Yahaya Alhassan, President of The New Ghana and signatory to the petition, stressed the broader implications of the case:

“This is not just about Muniru. It’s about justice. It’s about standing up for the wrongly accused and supporting individuals imprisoned over circumstances beyond their control.”

The organisation is urging the government to expedite a review of Muniru’s case and take swift action to secure his release.

It also pledged continued advocacy for individuals wrongfully imprisoned or detained due to inability to pay minor fines a chronic issue affecting Ghana’s criminal justice system.

As the petition gains momentum among stakeholders and community leaders, many await a formal response from the presidency, viewing the case as a test of Ghana’s commitment to justice and reform.
