The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has accused the party’s leadership of openly favouring Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.
In a statement signed by campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng, Esq., on Thursday, August 28, the team condemned what it called the “unfair promotion” of Dr. Bawumia as the establishment’s preferred candidate.
The campaign cited the exclusive streaming of Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing on the NPP’s official social media platforms as evidence of bias.
“The use of the official party handles to stream only DMB’s nomination filing is a betrayal of the very unity our leadership claims to preach,” the statement said.
According to the campaign, the move forms part of a recurring pattern of preferential treatment that undermines internal competition and risks deepening divisions in the party.
Kwarteng also tied the bias to the NPP’s electoral setbacks in 2024, arguing that under Dr. Bawumia, the party suffered its “worst results in history,” including a 31% drop in national votes and sharp declines across northern, southern, and Zongo constituencies.
“At such a time, the priority should be rebuilding a stronger, united party. Instead, leadership continues to impose the very candidate under whom we suffered these losses, shamelessly projecting him as the ‘establishment choice’ by giving him undue advantages and platforms,” the statement added.
The campaign further warned that if the alleged favoritism persists, other aspirants may be compelled to chart independent strategies.
“The grassroots will not be forced into silence while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual. Never!” Kwarteng cautioned.
