Kete-Krachi boat disaster: CIMAG calls for new laws to regulate boat operations

The Executive Director of the Centre for International Maritime Affairs, Ghana (CIMAG), Albert Derrick Fiatui, has called for the introduction of new laws to regulate the activities of boats operating on the country’s inland waters.

Speaking to Power FM’s Dwaboase host Piesie Okrah, CIMAG boss Fiatui emphasized that the absence of a clear regulatory framework for boat operations poses serious safety and environmental risks.

He noted that with the increasing number of boats being used for transportation, tourism, and fishing, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive legal framework to ensure safety, protect lives, and maintain order on Ghana’s waterways.

“At this point, let me state it categorically clear that Ghana needs a comprehensive Inland Water Safety Act to regulate the operations of these vessels and enforce safety protocols,” he said. “Once we have this Act in place, those who are culpable will be held accountable.”

His call follows the recent Kete-Krachi boat disaster on the Volta Lake which claimed 16 lives.

The tragedy has reignited public concern over safety standards and regulatory oversight on Ghana’s inland waters.
