Kotoko edge GoldStars 1-0 to clinch champion of champions title

Asante Kotoko opened their 2025/26 season on a winning note, edging Bibiani GoldStars 1-0 on Sunday to lift the Champion of Champions trophy at Dun’s Park.

The Porcupine Warriors, eager to rebound from a disappointing Top 4 campaign earlier this month, started brightly but were tested by GoldStars’ early pressure.

Goalkeeper Mohammed Camara produced a superb stop to deny Appiah McCarthy’s free kick, while defender Shaybu Abubakar cleared Atta Kumi’s effort off the line.

Kotoko gradually found their rhythm, with Albert Amoah going close before Emmanuel Kobi in the GoldStars goal pulled off a brilliant save to keep the game goalless.

The breakthrough arrived in the 70th minute when substitute Hamzata Musah latched onto a Seth Kwadwo cross and drilled a low strike into the bottom corner, sealing victory for Abdul Karim Zito’s side.

The win gives Kotoko their fourth Champion of Champions crown, adding to triumphs in 1977, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

More importantly, it provides a timely morale boost and a statement of intent as the Kumasi giants aim for major honours in the new season.
