“Look beyond football, sell Ghana to the world for investment” — Julius Debrah to 2026 world cup oversight committee

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has urged members of the Ministerial Oversight Committee for Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup participation to look beyond football and use the global event as a platform to market the country’s investment potential.

Speaking during the inauguration of the 11-member committee on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the Jubilee House, Mr. Debrah said the World Cup presents a unique opportunity for Ghana to position itself as a prime destination for investment, tourism, and cultural exchange.

According to him, while football remains central, Ghana should not limit its strategy to sports alone.

“So, not necessarily only looking at football. What are some of the things we can associate with our presence there to let people know that our country is an investment destination for potential investors?” he said.

He stressed that tourism promotion must be a key component of Ghana’s World Cup agenda.

“Promotion of our tourism is one, and I strongly believe that if we package ourselves very well, we should be able to take advantage of our presence on the world stage to market the tourism potential of our nation,” he added.

The 11-member Ministerial Oversight Committee is composed of senior government officials, sports administrators, and security representatives, including Stan Xoese Dogbe from the Presidency, Ministers Kofi Adams, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and George Opare Addo, deputy ministers Yusif Jajah and Ampem Nyarkoh, GFA President Kurt Okraku, Deputy National Security Coordinator Elizabeth Yankah, football legend Abedi Pele, and Sports Ministry Chief Director Wilhelmina Asamoah.

The committee will coordinate Ghana’s preparations, logistics, and international engagement ahead of the 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
