President John Dramani Mahama is set to deliver his first State of the Nation address on Thursday, February 27, 2025, as announced by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga in Parliament today, February 21.
This address will outline the president’s vision and priorities for the nation, providing insight into his administration’s plans and policies.
In fulfilling this constitutional requirement, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister of State in charge of government communications had earlier pointed out that the President would use this opportunity to “delve deeply into our current economic situation, what we inherited, and the plans moving forward to ensure economic revival.”
Mr Ofosu Kwakye also announced at a media briefing after the first cabinet meeting of the administration that the National Economic Dialogue would take place on 3rd and 4th March, when various stakeholders are expected to meet and discuss matters aimed at transforming the country’s economy.
Mahama Shocked at Economic Mess
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim told TV XYZ that President Mahama has been shocked by how the economy was mismanaged by the previous government under Presiden Akufo-Addo.
According to Muslim, President Mahama has uncovered significant corruption and mismanagement in the system, inherited from the previous NPP government led by Nana Akufo-Addo, revealing that the President would inform Ghanaians about it when he addresses the country.
Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, where the government announced a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers, President John Mahama had accused the previous government of mishandling the country’s affairs, claiming it managed the economy criminally.
He said: “We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene,” he said.
Reacting to Mr Mahama’s statement on Dwaboase on TV XYZ, Madam Muslim indicated that the alleged corruption and wastage under the Akufo-Addo administration are said to have prevented the Mahama government from increasing base pay for public sector workers by more than 10%.
“Had it not been the wanton corruption and wastage by the Akufo-Addo government , the Mahama administration could have increased the base pay for public sector workers by 100%,” she noted.
