President John Dramani Mahama has nominated seven Justices of the Court of Appeal for elevation to the Supreme Court of Ghana, in a move aimed at strengthening the judiciary and filling existing vacancies on the apex court bench.
The nominations, made under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, were announced today April 30, 2025.
A letter dated April 29 and signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, conveyed the list to Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
The seven nominees are:
- Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
- Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
- Justice Senyo Dzamefe
- Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
- Justice Philip Bright Mensah
- Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
- Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
The nominees bring extensive experience from the Court of Appeal, and their elevation is expected to enhance the Supreme Court’s ability to deliver timely and robust decisions in critical national matters.
Per constitutional procedure, the Judicial Council will first assess the nominees’ qualifications and suitability.
The list will then be forwarded to Parliament for vetting and approval. This layered process is designed to ensure merit-based appointments and uphold judicial independence.
The appointments, once confirmed, are expected to bolster the Supreme Court’s capacity to adjudicate complex constitutional, civil, and criminal matters, reinforcing public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.
