Mahama swears in Chief Justice, pledges commitment to judicial independence

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the independence of the Judiciary, stressing that judicial autonomy is not a favour but a constitutional duty.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie at the Jubilee House on Monday, November 17, 2025, President Mahama emphasised that the courts must be empowered to discharge their mandate without fear or favour.

“The strength of our democracy depends on a delicate yet essential balance of powers among the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary. Each branch is supposed to operate independently, yet must collaborate in service of the common good,” he said.

Reiterating his pledge to uphold this principle, the President noted:

“An independent Judiciary is not a favour to the courts. It is a constitutional necessity and a protection for every citizen, including the President.”

President Mahama urged Ghanaians to actively support efforts to safeguard the institutional, financial, and administrative autonomy of the courts.

“Decisions of our courts, whether we agree or disagree, whether popular or unpopular, must be respected and enforced. This is the bedrock of the rule of law,” he stated.

Acknowledging recent criticism directed at the Judiciary, the President expressed optimism that public trust would be rebuilt under the new Chief Justice.

“I am confident that under your leadership, My Lord Chief Justice, the Judiciary will continue to uphold its constitutional mandate without fear or favour, and as you pledged, without affection or ill-will,” he said.

He added that citizens everywhere increasingly demand institutions that not only function effectively but also inspire trust.

President Mahama’s remarks underscore his administration’s broader governance strategy, anchored on rule of law, institutional renewal, and democratic accountability as Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie formally begins his tenure.
