MIIF, Gold Fields executives hold strategic talks on potential investment opportunities

Executives of Gold Fields Ghana on Thursday met with their counterparts at the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) to discuss the company’s operations, potential investment opportunities for the Fund, and areas of strategic collaboration.

The discussions highlighted the critical role of Gold Fields’ investments in Ghana, which currently account for 31 per cent of the company’s global production.

The Gold Fields Ghana delegation was led by Mr. Elliot Twum, Senior Vice President and Managing Director; Ms. Emma Morrison, Regional Head of Corporate Affairs; and Mr. William Empeh, Head of Human Resources.

The MIIF delegation was led by Mr. Kwabena Barning, Chief Technical Officer, together with other members of senior management.

In his presentation, Mr. Twum outlined the key pillars underpinning Gold Fields’ strong operational track record, which he said would continue to drive the company’s contributions going forward.

He identified the presence of an experienced technical and management team, robust organisational governance, a strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) footprint, Ghana’s significant mineral resource potential, and the company’s operations within a tier-one mining jurisdiction as critical success factors.

“Collectively, these elements reflect our unwavering commitment to sustaining operations and advancing asset development in Ghana,” he said.

Touching on ESG initiatives, Mr. Twum highlighted Gold Fields’ establishment of Ghana’s first mine foundation, the construction of a US$27 million, 33-kilometre asphalted Tarkwa–Damang road, a US$13 million, 10,000-capacity stadium, and the rehabilitation of tailings storage facilities into productive farmland.

He noted that these initiatives earned the company the “Best Green Mine” and “Best Performer in Environmental Management” awards in 2024.

The MIIF team expressed appreciation to Gold Fields for the engagement and reaffirmed the Fund’s keen interest in exploring future collaboration through knowledge sharing, capacity building, and other mutually beneficial initiatives.
