The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, on Tuesday conducted an unannounced inspection of the Ramsar wetlands within the Tema Municipality, uncovering extensive illegal encroachment on the ecologically protected area.
Accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, the Minister expressed grave concern over the unlawful occupation and development of the Ramsar site by individuals and corporate entities, warning that such actions threaten both the region’s environmental sustainability and legal land-use frameworks.
Describing the encroachment as a serious violation of environmental laws, Hon. Ocloo issued a firm directive for all unauthorized occupants to vacate the area immediately.
She announced that a demolition exercise would commence on Monday, August 4, 2025, to reclaim the protected land and restore its ecological purpose.
“This is not just about enforcing the law, it is about preserving our natural resources for the benefit of future generations,” the Minister stated. “Those who have illegally occupied Ramsar lands must take this notice seriously. We will act swiftly and decisively.”
She cautioned that no individual or entity will be spared during the operation and emphasized that the government will not be liable for any loss of property resulting from the demolition.
The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding land use regulations and protecting the region’s vulnerable ecological zones.
Residents and stakeholders have been urged to support the initiative and report any further encroachment or environmental violations.
