Minority accuses state security of intimidation and rights abuses

The Minority in Parliament has accused state security operatives of engaging in intimidation and human rights abuses against former government officials, warning that such actions undermine democracy and investor confidence.

At a press conference, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin strongly condemned what he described as a pattern of unlawful raids targeting appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Raids on Former Officials

Afenyo-Markin cited a recent raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, where armed security personnel allegedly stormed his home searching for cash in a supposed vault.

He compared this to a similar raid on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s home, reportedly led by Richard Jakpa, an NDC activist claiming to be a National Security operations director.

The Minority Leader condemned these incidents, alleging that security operatives used the raids as an opportunity to steal and infringe on individuals’ rights.

Call to End “Rambo-Style” Tactics

Afenyo-Markin denounced the aggressive “Rambo-style” approach of these security operations, calling for an immediate cessation of such tactics.

He warned that if these actions continue, ordinary citizens may feel compelled to take matters into their own hands to defend themselves.

The Minority Leader urged President John Mahama to intervene and restore public trust in the rule of law.

Arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah

Afenyo-Markin also condemned the recent arrest of political commentator Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, describing it as another example of state intimidation.

Reiterating their stance, the Minority demanded an end to what they called lawless conduct by security agencies and insisted that law enforcement must operate within legal boundaries.
