Newlywed Mercy Amoah, wife of the late Sergeant Ernest Mensah Addo, delivered a deeply moving tribute at the state funeral for the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, describing her husband as her greatest supporter, source of joy, and hero in life and death.
The couple had been married for just six weeks before the tragedy.
“My biggest cheerleader, the kindest of hearts, my big brother, and my Mantse… My heart aches beyond words thinking of not seeing your beautiful ‘receptionist smile’ or hearing you call me ‘Manye’ a hundred times a day,” she began.
Mercy reflected on the love and understanding they shared, recalling Ernest’s promise to give her a life many would envy.
“These shoes you’ve put on me, no one wishes to wear. Should I say you lied? No, because I know if you had control over life, you would choose to live a thousand years to make me happy.”
She praised his humility, work ethic, and dedication to service, which earned him the nickname “Adwumawura.” She also spoke fondly of his deep attachment to the Z9 aircraft — “like your first child,” and his habit of spending long nights researching how best to care for it.
Calling him “My Apostle,” Mercy recalled their shared prayer routines and his unwavering faith.
“Mantse, it’s been days, and you have not called at 5 am for us to pray. Ah, Death, shame on you! You have not won; Christ has, because Ernest died knowing Him as his Lord and Saviour.”
She ended her tribute with words of eternal love and remembrance:
“Meeting you has shown me that angels truly exist in human form. You will forever be my HERO. Forever in my thoughts, never to die. Continue to rest in the bosom of our Lord till we meet again. Goodbye, my love.”
Sergeant Ernest Mensah Addo died alongside Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, and two other Air Force personnel, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala and Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu.
