NIA engages former executive secretaries to strengthen Ghana’s national identity system

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has begun a nationwide engagement with its former Executive Secretaries as part of a strategy to honour their contributions and draw on their experience to guide the Authority’s next phase of growth.

Led by Executive Secretary Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, the NIA team is embarking on courtesy visits aimed at learning from past leaders, preserving institutional memory, and reinforcing the foundations of Ghana’s national identity system.

The first visit was to Professor Ernest Dumor, the NIA’s founding Executive Secretary, whose pioneering vision established the framework for Ghana’s identity infrastructure.

Prof. Dumor reflected on the Authority’s early days and offered guidance to support the mission of building a sustainable, future-ready identity system.

On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the team also visited Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, who led the Authority from 2008–2009 and again from 2017–2024.

Prof. Attafuah is credited with overseeing the nationwide registration and issuance of the Smart Biometric Ghana Card to over 17 million Ghanaians, extending registration to children under 15 and citizens abroad, and establishing NIA’s regional and district offices.

During the engagement, Prof. Attafuah praised the new leadership for maintaining momentum and urged them to focus on efficient, harassment-free service delivery, sustainability of the NIA data ecosystem, cost-saving measures, and legislative reforms to safeguard the integrity of identity records.

Mr. Deku described the initiative as a reflection of the NIA’s commitment to celebrate its pioneers while leveraging their insights to strengthen Ghana’s identity landscape.

He reaffirmed the Authority’s resolve to build on the solid foundations laid by past leaders to deliver a secure, inclusive, and future-driven identity system for all Ghanaians.

The statement was signed by Mr. William Darlas Ampomoah, Head of the Corporate Directorate.
