NIA proposes amendment to Act 707 to bolster national security role

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced plans to amend its governing law, Act 707, to strengthen coordination with security agencies and enhance its role in safeguarding Ghana’s national security.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary during the celebration of International Identity Day, the Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampoma, said the amendments would enable the Authority to leverage technology more effectively in support of security and law enforcement.

“This amendment is designed to make the NIA a reliable partner in Ghana’s security architecture, ensuring that identity systems support the broader goal of protecting our nation,” Mr. Ampoma stated.

He noted that under the leadership of Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, the NIA has expanded service outlets nationwide to improve accessibility and reduce congestion at registration centres.

Mr. Ampoma further revealed that, beginning next month, the NIA in collaboration with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will introduce a 24-hour Ghana Card registration service.

This year’s International Identity Day celebration was held under the theme “My Identity, My Umbrella.”
