The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven suspects in connection with a robbery involving a 5,400-litre fuel tanker.
The suspects Mark Abito, Shaibu Adams, Awini Ibrahim, Muniru Ayeba, Barnabas Atiga, and Abdullah Ganiu, were arrested on 7th August, 2025 following a coordinated snap check operations in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
Preliminary investigations indicate that at about 12:30 am that day, officers at the Ablekuma Borkorborkor snap checkpoint in Accra, stopped a green pickup with three passengers in its open bucket. Two of the passengers jumped down followed by the third passenger who tried to prevent them.
The two shouted for help, and reported that they had been attacked after armed men hijacked their fuel tanker (GT 2493–20) near Nsawam the previous night. The driver of the pickup vehicle immediately sped off, abandoning one occupant, who was arrested after a brief chase.
The victims, both tanker drivers from Tema, saidafter their fuel tank was taken from them, they were handcuffed and transported in the pickup until the police intervened.
Subsequently, acting on intelligence, the Kibi Divisional Police arrested six other suspects at Asikwa Junction near Bunso, where the stolen tanker was found alongside another tanker (GN 804–13) and a pumping machine believed to have been used to tranfer the fuel. A VW Golf (GW 5185–Z) linked to the suspects was also impounded. All exhibits remain in police custody.
The suspects are in custody and will be put before court to face justice.
