President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Cybersecurity Authority to intensify efforts to root out romance scams and online hate speech, warning that offenders will be prosecuted and punished.
He noted with concern the rising trend of ethnic-based hate speech on digital platforms, stressing that it must be closely monitored and curtailed.
“Cybercrime ignores borders. A hacker in one country can breach systems halfway across the world within seconds. That is why Ghana cannot act alone,” President Mahama said.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the President explained that romance scams are among the most persistent cybercrimes Ghana faces.
He said the country continues to collaborate with international partners to address the menace, and under extradition treaties, culprits found guilty are returned to face justice in Ghana.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to global cooperation in the fight against cybercrime, emphasizing the need for unity of purpose, a clear strategy, and disciplined execution.
“We are already signatories to the Malabo Convention and the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime. These frameworks enhance our ability to cooperate internationally and align our laws with global standards,” he added.
This year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month is being observed under the theme: “Building a Safe, Informed and Accountable Digital Space.”
