President John Dramani Mahama has extended an invitation to Chinese investors to partner with Ghana in the establishment of a new green city, as the country prepares to embark on a transformative urban development phase.
According to President Mahama, the proposed city will span three regions, Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern, and will serve as a model for sustainable, technologically advanced urban living.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Global Leaders Conference on Women’s Empowerment in Beijing, China, President Mahama revealed plans to soon appoint a transaction advisor to lead the project’s implementation.
This will follow the inauguration of an inter-ministerial committee to guide the design and feasibility process.
“As part of Ghana’s transformation, we plan to establish a new green city that will straddle the three regions of Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern. I will soon inaugurate an inter-ministerial committee to guide the design and feasibility study of this new city. I will also appoint a transaction advisor to lead the process for the implementation of this all-important project,” he said.
President Mahama noted that the new city would incorporate cutting-edge technology in urban design, planning, and innovation, adding that it is expected to be executed in four phases over a 20-year period.
“This will be a green, digital city that showcases advanced technology in urban design, planning, and innovation. The project is planned to span 20 years and will be implemented in four phases,” he stated.
He further expressed optimism that the first phase of the project would begin before the end of his tenure and encouraged Chinese investors to take part in the landmark initiative.
“My expectation is that the first phase will commence before my tenure in office ends. I invite our Chinese colleagues to be part of this all-important project,” he appealed.
