The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asake Awingobit, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to terminate the remaining contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML).
Speaking at a press briefing at the International Press Centre in Accra on Wednesday, June 4, Awingobit emphasized that the matter is not merely about procurement but concerns justice, good governance, and Ghana’s international credibility.
He referenced the presidential directive issued in April 2024, which suspended SML’s upstream petroleum and minerals revenue monitoring contracts following an investigative report by the fourth estate and an audit conducted by KPMG.
Despite this suspension, Awingobit noted, SML continues to receive over $1.3 million monthly under its downstream petroleum contract.
“At a time when the government is working hard to reduce financial waste and stabilize the economy, it is deeply troubling that SML is still being paid over $1.4 million every month,” he stated.
Awingobit also reminded President Mahama of his campaign promise ahead of the 2024 elections to reject what he described as a “fraudulent contract.”
He stressed that verbal commitments are no longer sufficient and called for decisive action.
The Executive Secretary urged the President to uphold his pledge and prioritize the public interest by cancelling the remaining contract, which he argues continues to drain national resources without delivering commensurate value.
