Sky train scandal: former GIIF board chair granted GH₵10m bail

Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has been granted bail of GH₵10 million with two sureties justified by landed property in Accra, following his arraignment on four charges related to the controversial Sky Train project.

Mr. Akumfi, a former Minister of Education and Minister of Ports and Harbors, pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include willfully causing financial loss to the state and the intentional dissipation of public funds.

The case, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, has been adjourned to June 10, 2025, for a case management conference.

As part of his bail conditions, Akumfi must deposit his travel documents with the court and report weekly to the police.

The charges stem from a $2 million payment made in 2019 by GIIF to Africa Investor Holdings Limited for feasibility work on the Sky Train project an initiative that was ultimately never realized.

Prosecutors allege that the payment was made without full board approval and without proper due diligence.

Defense lawyers cited the 78-year-old’s recent hip surgery, heart condition, and longstanding public service record as grounds for granting bail.

The case has drawn widespread public attention amid growing scrutiny of large-scale infrastructure deals and procurement practices in Ghana.

The upcoming case management session is expected to outline the key evidentiary issues and set the direction for trial proceedings.
