Suame market fire: gov’t donates gh¢100k to affected traders

Government has donated GH¢100,000 to support traders who lost their shops in the devastating fire at the Suame Post Office Market in Kumasi.

The package was presented on Wednesday, August 27, by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who visited the scene to commiserate with victims.

He described the incident as “heartbreaking,” noting that many traders had lost years of hard work and investment overnight. It is heartbreaking to save capital for business, just for fire to destroy everything,” Dr. Amoakohene said, assuring that President John Dramani Mahama’s government will continue to stand with the victims.

The fire, which broke out late Tuesday night, razed more than 300 shops and was intensified by the explosion of over 30 gas cylinders. Although no casualties were recorded, losses are estimated in the millions of cedis.

Speaking on behalf of the affected traders, Madam Mercy Oppong thanked government for the swift intervention and appealed for further support when reconstruction begins.

Firefighters remain on the ground to ensure full containment as authorities’ complete assessments of the damage.
