Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged transport operators and commuters to prioritise the proper care of government-owned transport assets, stressing that such property belongs to all citizens.
Her remarks come against the backdrop of growing concerns over a shortage of commercial vehicles, a situation that has resulted in overcrowding and, in some cases, the exploitation of passengers.
Speaking during a working visit with management and staff of Metro Mass Transit Limited on Friday, January 16, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a smooth, efficient, and reliable public transport system.
She encouraged staff of Metro Mass to prioritise the maintenance of buses provided to them, noting that proper upkeep is key to extending the lifespan of the vehicles and sustaining quality service delivery.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang also reiterated the government’s readiness to retool Metro Mass and supply additional buses to improve operations, stressing that even older vehicles can remain functional when properly maintained.
“Government is willing to play its role to retool Metro Mass and to supply even more buses. And as time goes on, yes, 10 years is a long time, but we also know we live in a country where even older vehicles can function.
“Let us take good care of property that comes from government because that is all of us,” she said.
