UN condemns deadly drone strike on peacekeepers in Sudan’s Kordofan

A drone strike targeted a United Nations peacekeeping logistics base in Kadugli, South Kordofan, Sudan, on Saturday, killing six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and injuring eight others in what UN Secretary-General António Guterres described as a “horrific” and “unjustifiable” attack that may constitute war crimes under international law.

All victims were members of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), deployed to the disputed oil-rich Abyei region on the Sudan-South Sudan border. Guterres offered condolences to Bangladesh and the families of the fallen, while reiterating calls for an immediate ceasefire amid Sudan’s nearly three-year civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Sudanese military blamed the RSF for the strike, calling it a “subversive” act, while the RSF denied involvement. Footage showed thick black smoke rising from the compound. Bangladesh strongly condemned the incident, with its interim leader expressing deep sadness.

The attack marks the deadliest single incident against UN personnel in Sudan since the conflict erupted in April 2023, highlighting the escalating dangers for peacekeepers in the volatile region.
