Uphold discipline and integrity to safeguard Ghana’s healthcare future – Vice President to ACM graduates

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged newly qualified doctors of the Accra College of Medicine (ACM) to uphold discipline, integrity and an unwavering commitment to lifelong learning, stressing that the future of Ghana’s healthcare system depends on their professionalism.

Addressing the Class of 2025 during their graduation ceremony in Accra, the Vice President described the occasion as a milestone in both the personal journeys of the graduates and the evolution of Ghana’s medical education.

She commended ACM for its rapid growth since its establishment in 2015 to help address the country’s chronic shortage of medical doctors.

From an initial intake of just 14 students, the College now boasts modern training facilities, advanced learning technologies, and full accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Medical and Dental Council.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang called on donors and development partners to support ACM’s efforts to strengthen healthcare training and delivery in Ghana.

The event also marked ACM’s 10th anniversary and its 6th Congregation.

Launching the anniversary celebrations, Chairman of the African Education Trust Fund, Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, praised the institution as a model for medical education in Africa.

He encouraged the new doctors to be bold, innovative, and compassionate in their practice.

President of ACM, Professor Afua A. J. Hesse, congratulated the Class of 2024, ACM’s largest graduating cohort, and urged them to uphold the College’s values while maintaining integrity in their professional conduct.

Chairman of the College Council, Emeritus Professor Stephen Adei, appealed to government to support private medical schools, proposing an annual intake boost of 50 students per institution to help alleviate Ghana’s doctor deficit.

He emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in expanding medical education and improving national health outcomes.
