The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has said the Upper East Region is well possitioned to become a major hub for year-round agricultural production in Ghana.
In a post on his official Facebook page following a tour of the region, Mr. Ayariga highlighted the vast irrigation potential along the White Volta and existing dam systems.
“I have just concluded a remarkable tour of the Upper East Region, focusing on the banks of the White Volta and our major dam systems,” he wrote. “My objective was to assess the significant opportunities for sustainable, year-round agricultural production in this area.”

According to him, visits to irrigation schemes such as the Vea and Tono dams reaffirmed the region’s readiness for agricultural transformation.
“Witnessing the operational impact of existing irrigation schemes such as the Vea and Tono dams was deeply affirming,” Mr. Ayariga stated, noting that the projects are already empowering thousands of smallholder farmers.
He described the Tono Irrigation Project in Navrongo as a clear demonstration of what is possible, pointing out that the 2,490-hectare facility supports about 6,000 farmers.
“It is evident that the foundational infrastructure for an agricultural transformation is firmly in place,” he wrote, adding that the Upper East Region has more than 220 dams and dugouts available for further development.

Mr. Ayariga said he observed productive fields of rice, onions, tomatoes, and peppers during the tour, confirming the viability of both high-value and staple crops.
“The strategic priority is clear: to leverage these assets systematically, transforming the Upper East Region into a reliable hub for staple crops such as rice and maize,” he stated.
He noted that such a transformation would advance national food security, strengthen economic resilience, and create sustainable livelihoods for farmers across the region.
